Newborn Care Q&A

What is newborn care?

Newborn care is a branch of pediatrics focused on educating new parents on how to adequately care for their baby. Some common topics that newborn care covers include:

  • Handling a newborn
  • Changing your baby’s diapers
  • Bathing your baby
  • Feeding and burping your baby
  • Tips for soothing your baby
  • Swaddling your baby

Newborn care also provides tips and insights on caring for a healing circumcision.

What happens at my baby’s first doctor’s appointment?

Newborn care begins at your baby’s first doctor’s appointment which usually takes place a day or two after giving birth. During this appointment, your Raintree Healthcare provider does a physical exam, weighs and measures your baby, and answers any questions you have.

Your doctor also takes this time to immunize your baby. Infants and young children need vaccines because their immune systems are susceptible to contagious diseases and viruses like the flu.

What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure that involves your Raintree Healthcare provider carefully removing the foreskin of your son’s penis. An estimated 55-65% of male children in the United States undergo circumcision.

If you decide to have your son circumcised, your doctor performs the procedure within 48 hours of you giving birth. Circumcision during the newborn period is safe and well-tolerated.

What is recovery following circumcision like?

In the first 24 hours following your son’s circumcision, it’s perfectly normal to notice some swelling and bleeding in your child’s diaper.

Keep the gauze on for at least a day following the operation and apply a topical barrier ointment on the end of the penis after each bath and diaper change.

If your child is fussy or crying, you might also want to give them some children’s pain medication. Just make sure to follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Is circumcision right for my child?

Circumcision is a very personal decision. Before you schedule a procedure, make sure to consider medical factors as well as your religious and cultural beliefs.

If you have questions or concerns about this type of operation, don’t hesitate to bring them up. The team at Raintree Healthcare will work with you to develop a treatment plan that best aligns with your child’s health and needs.
